The Last Thing He Wanted, a film directed by Dee Rees, is the story of a Washington DC political journalist, Elena McMahon (Anne Hathaway), one of the best in her field with years of experience behind her. The reporter is investigating an arms trafficking in Central America, when she discovers that the one behind the smuggling is her father (Willem Dafoe). Having met her parent to dissuade him from illicit trafficking, Elena discovers that the man is seriously ill and asks her as a last wish to deliver a commission for him. Although she is in complete disagreement, the journalist accepts her, convinced that in this way she too can be able to find the key to the problem of this smuggling and solve the case. Pushed more and more into the eye of the storm, the reporter will end up becoming one of the protagonists of the story, finding herself trapped in an intricate web, in which it is difficult to find a clean way out.
The only one who seems to be able to help her is secret agent Treat Morrison (Ben Affleck), with whom she will eventually fall in love.
