The Boys in the Band is a Netflix original film directed by Joe Mantello, a film adaptation of the play of the same name by Mart Crowley, which in 1970 had already inspired the film directed by William Friedkin entitled Party for the birthday of dear friend Harold. It is 1968, and although New York City has always been a city in step with the times, then being homosexual was still considered a secret to be kept well hidden. Michael (Jim Parsons), a screenwriter with an addiction to alcohol and shopping, decides to throw a birthday party for his irreverent and narcissistic friend Harold (Zachary Quinto). Guests include Michael's former flame Donald (Matt Bomer); artist Larry (Andrew Rannells) and his roommate Hank (Tuc Watkins), a professor who recently broke up with his wife; the library compound Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington) and the hyperactive interior designer Emory (Robin de Jesús). The group of friends is joined by Michael's old college friend, Alan (Brian Hutchison), and what should be Harold's birthday present, the charming and naive “Cowboy” (Charlie Carver). During the celebrations, found locked in the house for the rain, Michael proposes to play a game: each of them will have to call the person they loved most in life and declare their feelings.
