The Lost Daughter, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, tells the story of Leda (Olivia Colman), a divorced middle-aged woman who works as an English teacher and looks after her daughters. The latter, however, decide to leave for Canada, where her father resides, and Leda finds herself spending a period of complete solitude, during which, contrary to what she expected, she feels free and light.
This is how she decides to leave for a beach holiday alone. Here she comes across a very noisy family and focuses mainly on her mother and daughter, who seem to be linked by a deep relationship, which disturbs Leda very much. The vision of the family, in fact, leads the woman to abandon herself to her memories: to when she had to face for the first time motherhood, fear, fears and unconventional choices that she made in her life as a mother . She inevitably also reflects on what the consequences of her choices have been for her family and she finds herself so immersed in a journey into the meanders of her mind that she forces her to face her past.
