The Mauritanian, the film directed by Kevin Macdonald, tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim), a Muslim man from Mauritania, who against his will is captured by the American government along with many other foreigners, when after the attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States launched a series of military operations with the aim of identifying all those involved with anti-American terrorism. Mohamedou was held in Guantanamo prison for fourteen long years, although no charges were ever filed against him.
Legally defending the man is Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) who together with her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley), to guarantee Mohamedou's freedom, will have to face up to a thousand obstacles, including federal skepticism. Military Attorney Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch), who hopes to avenge the deaths of his military colleagues killed in the 9/11 terror attacks, will eventually find himself teaming up with Hollander and unearth surprising and shocking discoveries.
