Minamata, a film directed by Andrew Levitas, is based on a true story, that of the American documentary photographer William Euegene, called only Gene, Smith (Johnny Depp), who during the years of the Second World War had taken some shots in the Pacific, up to when he was not hit in the face by a grenade.
Smith does not give up and, totally healed, decides to return to Asia in the early seventies to make one of the best reportages of him. The photographer documented the effects of mercury pollution, which in Japan and in particular in Minamata had caused acute intoxication in the population from 1932 to 1968. The substance was released into the wastewater by a local chemical industry and was it was accumulated in molluscs, crustaceans and fish. The deaths lasted for over thirty years, while the government failed to cope with the epidemic that went down in history as Minamata Disease.
