Judas and the Black Messiah, a film directed by Shaka King, is set in 1968, a year that saw many protests, including that of African Americans for civil rights. In this delicate period, during which the demonstrations often lead to acts of violence, the young climber Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) becomes head of the Black Panthers of Illinois. The group takes sides against the police, accused of using violence against African Americans without justification.
Hampton is soon warned by the American government as a threat and the FBI decides to intervene, infiltrating the ranks of the Black Panthers, one of his men, William O 'Neil (LaKeith Stanfield). The latter is not a real agent, but a simple black citizen who had had several problems with the law, mainly due to his thefts, and to whom the FBI proposes to drop all charges, as long as he becomes an agent of counterintelligence and information on Hampton. After joining the Black Panthers, O'Neal quickly makes a career within the group, despite living in constant anxiety of being discovered. Soon the same infiltrator will find himself fascinated by the words of the charismatic leader, a sort of black Messiah, of whom he will be the Judas ...
