Antebellum, a film directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, takes place on two temporal planes with two apparently distant and very different, yet connected, stories.
In the first we are in 1860, just before the American Civil War of 1861, which would later lead to the abolition of slavery. In a cotton field an African American woman "works" as a slave and repeatedly suffers violence from the owners of the crop, as well as her torturers.
The action moves to New York in 2020, where Veronica (Janelle Monáe) lives, a successful author and career woman, who gets stuck in a terrifying reality she can't get out of. She has been kidnapped and appears to have mysteriously disappeared. Her disappearance, however, turns out to be a race against time, as Veronica must solve a disturbing mystery as soon as possible.
But what do the tortured slave girl have in common in 1860 and the enterprising Veronica?
