The Stand-In, the film directed by Jamie Babbit, follows the story of Candy (Drew Barrymore), a famous actress of comedy, who after getting into trouble for being guilty of tax evasion, is about to enter rehab for a year. When her career seems to have come to an end, Candy devises a plan not to leave the scene for good: she takes on the "stand-in" of her Paula (Drew Barrymore), or her stunt double, for her to take the place of she. Paula is an ambitious and highly motivated woman who dreams of having a real acting career. Candy does not expect the woman to fully embrace her new role and will very soon lose control of her alter-ego. Paula will in fact take over the actress's identity, taking over her career and stealing even her boyfriend.
