Drive My Car, directed by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, tells the story of Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a happily married actor and theater director, until his wife, a playwright, suddenly passed away. Two years after this tragic event, Yusuke is hired to stage Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" at a theater festival held in Hiroshima.
During the performances he meets Misaki (Tōko Miura), a girl who has been chosen to be his driver. Spending more and more time together in a red Saab 900 between journeys, the two bond a lot and even the reserved Misaki manages to open up and talk about herself. The actor and his driver begin to tell each other sincerely, to the point of addressing the delicate theme of the past of both.
