The Buried Ship, the film directed by Simon Stone, is set in England in 1938, on the threshold of World War II. Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan), a wealthy and aristocratic woman, widow of Colonel Franck Pretty, owns a piece of land in Suffolk at Sutton Hoo, near the town of Woodbridge, on a headland above the River Deben. The woman is convinced that buried under her property are ancient treasures. So she decides to call amateur archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), a history and astronomy expert with a real passion for medieval Europe.
The two begin their research without knowing that shortly thereafter they will come across an important and surprising discovery: they will bring to light a ship-tomb of great historical value. As the country prepares for war, Mrs. Pretty and Mr. Brown will have to face the most important museum authorities, who, lured by the incredible news, will come forward with absurd claims.
