The French Dispatch, directed by Wes Anderson, is the filmmaker's tenth film and has been called a "love letter to journalism and journalists". In fact, it recounts events and personalities linked to the Parisian editorial staff of the French Dispatch newspaper, the European edition of the American Evening Sun in Liberty, Kansas. The story follows three distinct narrative lines that give life to a collection of short stories, published by the magazine, over a few decades of the twentieth century.
We are in Ennui-sur-Blasé, a French town where the editorial office is based, which deals with topics of various kinds, from articles on world politics to news items, touching on general culture topics, such as art, fashion, cuisine and life. When the editor of the newspaper dies, the editors decide to publish a commemorative issue, which brings together all the successful articles that the French Dispatch has published in recent years. Among these, the film explores three episodes in particular: the kidnapping of a chef, an artist sentenced to life in prison for a double murder and a report on the student riots of '68.
The editors of the French Dispatch Bill Murray as director Arthur Howitzer Jr., the editors played by Elisabeth Moss, Tilda Swinton, Fisher Stevens, Griffin Dunne and the portraitist Herbsaint Sazerac, who has the face of Owen Wilson. The cast of the film also includes Adrien Brody in the role of an art dealer named Julian Cadazio, Jeffrey Wright as Roebuck Wright, a food journalist from the South of the United States, and Benicio del Toro together with Léa Seydoux, respectively the artist Moses Rosenthaler in prison with life imprisonment and his prison guard Simone, as well as inspiring muse.
