Freaks out, a film directed by Gabriele Mainetti, is the story of four friends - Matilde (Aurora Giovinazzo), Cencio (Pietro Castellitto), Fulvio (Claudio Santamaria) and Mario (Giancarlo Martini) - so connected that they are almost like brothers. We are in 1943, in Rome, right in the middle of the Second World War and in the year in which the capital is the scene of bombings between the Nazis and the Allies.
The four work in a circus, run by Israel (Giorgio Tirabassi), who for them - more than a boss - is a sort of father figure. When the latter tries to find an escape route that takes them away from the conflict, he mysteriously disappears, leaving the four alone and without any prospects. Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario suddenly find themselves without what they had before, a circus that was synonymous with family and safety. Without Israel, without the marquee, they are just freak phenomena with no purpose in life, stuck in the Eternal City, which begins to collapse under the harsh blows of war.
