The United States vs. Billie Holiday, the film directed by Lee Daniels, tells the true story of the legendary blues and jazz singer Billie Holiday, who with her unique and unmistakable voice and style helped shape American popular music.
The film in particular tells of a dramatic episode that marked the artist's tormented life. In 1939 she composed a song different from the others: "Strange Fruit", a song that courageously condemned the history of the lynching of blacks in the United States and which was an unexpected success. Since then Billie Holiday (Andra Day) has been targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover operation. The government saw that song as a threat and feared that it would galvanize the anger of black Americans, which is why the FBI waged a personal battle against the woman, tying her drug addiction to racial reasons. The film also highlights aspects of the complex love affair between Billie Holiday and Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes), the black agent in charge of following her movements.
