The Comeback Trail, the film directed by George Gallo, is set in Los Angeles in 1974 and follows the story of Max Barber (Robert De Niro) and Walter Creason (Zach Braff), two ruined and debt-ridden producers who have a big bill to pay with a mob boss, Reggie Fontaine (Morgan Freeman). The two devise a bizarre scam to return Reggie's money and to get something in his pocket. In fact, they decide to shoot a fictional western by hiring an old movie star, Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones), making him shoot dangerous scenes to cause his death on the set and thus pocket all the insurance money. But the plan does not go as hoped, despite the numerous accidents, the elderly western actor seems to be immortal and getting him out of the way will not be so easy ...
