The Many Saints of Newark, a film directed by Alan Taylor, is the prequel to the events that happen in the successful historical TV series The Sopranos. It is set in the sixties, in the era of the Newark riots and the violent clashes between Italian-Americans and African-Americans and especially between their respective gangs. The film traces the story of Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini), focusing mainly on his youth and years of training and telling how his mentor, Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola), shaped him in the world of organized crime. A criminal education that allowed him to ascend to the conquest of a prominent role and power.
