Cryptozoo, the animated film directed by Dash Shaw, is set in 1970 and follows the story of Lauren Gray (original voice Lake Bell).
Growing up on a military base in Okinawa, Lauren was plagued by terrible nightmares as a child, until Baku, a legendary creature belonging to the category of cryptids, saves her life. The Baku in fact has the power to suck nightmares from the head of those who sleep. As an adult Lauren undertakes to protect these mythical creatures, both from poachers who hunt them for sport, and from the American army, which attracted by the particular powers of Baku she wants to take possession of her.
Joan (original voice Grace Zabriskie), Lauren's collaborator, plans to open a Cryptozoo, an amusement park to give humans the chance to admire the beauty of cryptids.
While Army Officer Nick (original voice Thomas Jay Ryan) will be gasping for breath on Lauren and Joan's neck, will the two women be able to rescue the cryptids and move their project forward?
