Separation, the film directed by William Brent Bell, follows the story of Jenny (Violet McGraw), a tender 8-year-old girl whose parents are constantly fighting. Her mother Maggie (Mamie Gummer) is a lawyer by profession, while her father Jeff (Rupert Friend) is an artist. Jenny is a child full of imagination who spends her days in solitude, surrounded by puppets and dolls called "Grisly Kin", which are inspired by the works of her father.
After the tragic accident in which Maggie loses her life, Jenny is left alone with her father and the two together try to rebuild a new life. But when Rivers (Brian Cox), Jenny's grandfather, sues for custody of the little girl, along with her babysitter (Madeline Brewer) who will take over from Jenny's mother, something dark arises in the little girl's life. Her puppets seem to come alive, transforming into scary and terrifying dolls. Jenny is the only person who can see these macabre creatures whose sole purpose is to inflict pain on the entire family.
