Ammonite, the film by Francis Lee, is set in England in 1840, where the now-disgraced famed fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works in solitude on the country's rugged south coast.
After the time of her great discoveries, the woman is now satisfied with finding fossils of little value to sell to tourists, to keep herself and her sick mother.
One day a rich man arrives and asks her to take care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), who has come to spend her convalescence there. It is an offer that she Mary cannot refuse.
At first, the two women often find themselves discounting, but soon, despite the social and character differences, an intense bond develops between Mary and Charlotte that leads them to question the true nature of their relationship.
