Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, directed by George C. Wolfe, is set in 1927 in Chicago and tells the story of a soul singer, Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), defined as the legendary "Mother of the blues".
During a recording session different tensions and dynamics are created that will lead the artist to clash with her producer and manager for control of her music. In the same room, to attend the altercation, there is also the band, including trumpeter Levee (Chadwick Boseman), who hopes one day to make his mark on the world of music. The small recording studio will become the setting for an exchange of ideas and stories, which will change the lives of those present forever.
