Love and Monsters, directed by Michael Matthews, is the story of a young man, Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien), who finds himself embroiled in an apocalypse of monsters, which he manages to survive. Seven years after that Monsterpocalypse, the survivors live underground as the monstrous creatures have taken control of the surface.
Alone underground, Joel manages to establish radio contact with his high school sweetheart, Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is about 80 miles from him and lives in a coastal colony. The two begin to reconnect and in a short time Joel finds himself in love with her. The boy, eager to see his beloved again, decides to venture to the surface, challenging any monster that stands between him and his Aimee.
